Depression: A Secret Battle Faced By Many

“It feels like everyone is moving forward and I am stuck all alone. No one understands me and I feel like I don’t have the energy to do anything. Who will help me?”

This is how one of my clients explained what depression felt like to him.

He was in a dilemma when he came to me for therapy and I could see how distracted and restless he was at the start of the session.

Fighting a battle within your own mind while hiding it from the outside world can be challenging and exhausting. Happiness and hope seem so scarce when stress is at an all time high. However, it is important to remember that you can defeat depression.

Sadness And Depression Are NOT The Same.

Sadness and depression are related emotional states but they differ in intensity, duration and underlying causes.

If you’re feeling sad for longer than 2 weeks, that’s depression, not sadness.

Sadness is a temporary emotional state triggered by a specific event or situation, such as loss, disappointment, or failure. It is a normal response to the challenges in life and fade over time.

In contrast, depression is a persistent and long-lasting condition characterized by a depressed mood and a loss of interest or pleasure in the daily activities that we carry out. It lasts for two weeks and can go on for months or even years if proper treatment is not given.

“Depression has many faces and disguises. It can hit each one of us differently. The feelings associated with depression are mostly similar but the experience can be entirely different for everyone.”

Defeating depression starts with taking charge of your mental health. Here are some steps you can take to regain control:

  • Seek professional help: Reach out to a therapist or counsellor who specializes in mental health. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.
  • Build a support network: Surround yourself with loved ones who understand and support you. Sharing your feelings and experiences with trusted individuals can provide immense relief.
  • Practice self-care: Take care of your physical and emotional well-being. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time in nature.
  • Stay connected: Maintain social connections, even if it feels challenging. Isolation can worsen depressive symptoms, so make an effort to reach out to friends and family.
  • Consider therapy: Explore different therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. These techniques can help you develop coping mechanisms and improve your overall well-being.
Awareness plays a crucial role in overcoming depression. By acknowledging and accepting your emotions, you can begin to understand the root causes of your struggles.

“My body feels heavy like I have to drag it everywhere and every morning I don’t feel like getting out of bed.”
“I don’t enjoy going out anymore, I don’t want to meet anyone. Why don’t people leave me alone?”
“Nothing tastes good anymore, I don’t feel like eating. I have lost a lot of weight.”
“Since I always feel tired and exhausted, I go to bed thinking to get some sleep, but it doesn’t work out for me. I have difficulty sleeping.
